If I leave, there may be trouble.
How far out are you making plans these days?
I ask that question as an increasing number of events and conferences in the imaging technology world as well as in my personal life are canceled or postponed.
Virtually every industry event through June has been canceled or postponed. Other events scheduled for late August through October are still scheduled to take place as of today. Two BTA events, Brand Print Americas 2020 (Formerly Print), and the Printing United show are a few examples of events still scheduled.
Perhaps we can get a clue as to what might happen with some of these still scheduled events by looking at what is happening in the entertainment world. I attend a lot of concerts and to date have had five canceled or postponed, and two others still in limbo—The Go Gos in July and Dion (“Runaround Sue”) in August. Some venues are starting to schedule shows for the summer and fall while many summer outdoor music festivals in the U.S. and Europe have canceled their summer seasons. Some of the concerts announced for late summer and fall are shows I would have purchased tickets for without hesitation prior to the pandemic. However, I can’t bring myself to plan that far out right now.
What would you do? You are likely in a similar situation, deciding whether to commit to future industry events, vacations, and other activities that in the pre-COVID-19 world you would normally book well in advance.
How comfortable will you be flying when this is over? How comfortable will you be walking the floor at a crowded industry event? What about a concert or sporting event? What about dining at a restaurant?
These are things we’ve never had to think about before.
Should I stay home, or should I go now is a question that many of us will wrestle with for the rest of the year.
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer.
