It’s been a busy year in the office technology industry. So what else is new? Yes, we can say that almost every year with the many announcements of acquisitions, new products, industry events, company milestones, and personnel changes.
After scouring the news releases posted on The Cannata Report website since January 2, we’ve created a list of what we consider the Top 12 Office Technology Industry News Stories of the Year So Far. You may agree or disagree with some or all of our choices. After all, that’s what lists of this kind are for–to create discussion. Note that this is not so much a discussion of trends (You’ll find that in our December/January Watchlist issue.) but rather a recap of industry news highlights. Here are our choices for the Top 12 Office Technology Industry News Stories of the Year So Far in descending order from #12 to #1.
12. Pacific Office Automation Announces 2023 Revenue of $458 Million – During its annual meeting on Saturday, January 13, the company announced annual revenue growth of 9% over 2022. This was Pacific Office Automation’s 47th consecutive year of revenue growth as it surpassed its revenue goal, hitting $458 million in 2023 sales, with growth across several markets, especially in the Southeastern U.S. The company has its sights set on $500 million in 2024 revenue. 11. TD SYNNEX Names Patrick Zammit CEO, Succeeding Rich Hume – The leadership transition goes into effect September 1. Zammit, who has served as the company’s chief operating officer since January 2024, has reportedly been instrumental in coordinating the company’s business strategy, driving profitable growth, and accelerating the adoption of new, high-growth technologies around the globe. Sharp Names Dino Pagliarello Vice President of Product Management and Production Print – Pagliarello will lead Sharp’s product management team responsible for the full range of multifunction products (MFPs) for the U.S. market. Frank Mallozzi Joins Konica Minolta as President of Industrial and Production Print – Mallozzi has a diverse background with proven expertise in all aspects of product development, global sales and revenue operations and marketing strategies. 5. DocuWare Reports Strong FY23 Results Driven by Cloud-Based Solutions – DocuWare experienced 17 percent global revenue growth in FY23. This was driven by significant demand for cloud-based solutions, reflected in a 31 percent growth in Cloud revenue. The company has reported a surge in new customer adoption, with 3,000 new customers worldwide over the past financial year. Of these, 85 percent of new customers opted for cloud solutions, indicating a growing demand for the accessibility, flexibility and scalability of a cloud- based ECM that meets best-in-class security and compliance standards. 4. Canon U.S.A., Inc. Announces Appointment of Isao “Sammy” Kobayashi to President and CEO – Effective January 1, 2024, Kobayashi succeeds Kazuto “Kevin” Ogawa, who will return to Japan for a new assignment following five years of service at Canon U.S.A., Inc., serving as president and CEO since April 2020. Konica Minolta Announces Divestiture of Its ERP Business – The company began offering the service in 2018 after its acquisition of MWA Intelligence, Inc., an SAP Business One partner that had developed an ERP platform for the imaging channel. Effective July 1, Konica Minolta U.S. ERP customers were transitioned to Avaniko Technologies (Avaniko), an SAP Business One Gold Partner that focuses on the digital transformation of small and mid-size businesses. “At this junction, we believe Avaniko is better staffed and suited to continue the ongoing development and support for the Forza platform,” said Konica Minolta President & CEO Sam Errigo. Xerox Announces New Operating Model and Organizational Structure to Further the Company’s Reinvention -According to Steven Bandrowczak, chief executive officer at Xerox, “The evolution of Xerox’s Reinvention aligns our resources in three key areas – improvement and stabilization of our core print business, increased productivity and efficiency through the formation of a new Global Business Services organization, and disciplined execution in revenue diversification. The shift to a business unit operating model is a continuation of our client-focused, balanced execution priorities and is designed to accelerate product and services, go-to-market, and corporate functions’ operating efficiencies across all geographies we serve.”
Key reinvention priorities and intended outcomes include:
- Core Print Business: Simplify our core products to align with the needs of economic buyers of today’s hybrid workplace. Outcome: Increase investment in a partner-enabled go-to-market model that supports how clients prefer to procure their print solutions. With partners, pursue strategic market share gains by increasing reach, improving cost to serve, and enhancing profitability.
- Global Business Services: Through simplification, drive enterprise-wide efficiency and scalability with centrally coordinated internal processes leveraging shared capabilities and platforms. - IT and Digital Services: Create greater organizational focus on Xerox’s emerging Digital Services and IT Services capabilities to accelerate revenue diversification toward markets with higher growth and profitability profiles.

Konica Minolta and FUJIFILM Business Innovation Business Alliance – Konica Minolta announced parent company Konica Minolta, Inc. has signed a memorandum of understanding to begin a feasibility study for a strategic alliance in the multifunction printer, office printer, and production printer segments. Konica Minolta and FUJIFILM Business Innovation are actively considering a business alliance to strengthen their business foundation, including the development of a robust supply system for their products.
