Han Jong-Hee, a senior Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. executive credited with elevating the company’s television business, died unexpectedly on Tuesday. Mr. Han was 63 years old, reports the Associated Press and other mainstream media outlets.
The co-chief executive, who oversaw the company’s consumer electronics and mobile devices businesses, died at a hospital after being treated for cardiac arrest, Samsung said. Han joined Samsung in 1988 and spent most of his career in TV-related divisions, during which the company became the world’s leading TV manufacturer. He was appointed co-vice chairman and CEO in 2022.
In late 2017, HP acquired Samsung’s toner cartridge and printer business in a deal valued at $1.05 billion (USD). As one of the world’s largest technology companies with dual strengths in components and finished consumer products, Samsung also stands as a “giant” among computer chip manufacturers. Jun Young Hyun, the semiconductor chief executive, is taking over Han’s duties as the company’s sole CEO, Samsung said in a regulatory filing.
