I just finished reading The Biggest Bluff: How I Learned to Pay Attention, Master Myself, and Win by writer, journalist, and professional poker player Maria Konnikova. I’m not a poker player, never played, but I was intrigued to read about how a complete novice learned the game from scratch, and in less than a year, won multiple poker tournaments.
Konnikova had a lot of help along the way. First, she had a background in psychology, which doesn’t hurt when sitting at a poker table. She was a successful freelance writer. That might not have helped her win any tournaments, but it enabled her to write a compelling book. She had a mentor, one of the best poker players in the world, who taught her about the skills and decision-making that makes a difference when playing the game. He also introduced her to other skilled players who shared their knowledge.
Most of all, she learned that the decision-making required to play poker successfully can be applied to one’s decision-making in everyday life, including professional situations.
Luck is a big part of the game, just as it is in life. Trusting your gut can be a mistake while observing and processing the available data results in better decisions.
Every industry, including the office technology industry, thrives on data. Businesses and companies sell products that process and compile data. Data is also critical for selling technology and solutions. But it isn’t the data itself that’s important. It’s how one uses it.
We remain immersed in one of the most serious inflection points in the history of the world—the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a lot of data, not necessarily numerical data, but informational data, circulating about its impact on business and everyday life. That data and what we do with it is critical to what comes next in this post-pandemic world.
In this issue, we examine potential scenarios as to what’s next, along with strategies for navigating the current business landscape. I urge you to pay attention to what your peers and industry thought-leaders are suggesting, then evaluate how this information can be applied to your business.
This is not the time to fold or sit out this hand because the future of your business is in play.
