There’s tremendous hype in the office technology industry about digital transformation (DX). It sounds like something new, but is it? This industry has been undergoing a digital transformation for nearly 30 years, and many of the products dealers have been selling during this time drive digital transformation in their customers’ businesses.
Digital transformation is nothing more than a new buzzword that describes what dealers are already doing. There’s nothing wrong with that, and it certainly makes for a good sales pitch. I imagine there are plenty of customers whose ears perk up when a sales rep references DX. But buzzwords only go so far, and the challenge is succinctly explaining how a product can help a customer’s digital transformation.
Even though many businesses are on a DX journey—whether they realize it or not—it’s a long road as new technologies and products that drive digital transformation are constantly introduced. For anyone selling technology, that represents an ongoing source of door-openers and talking points.
But it’s not only the office technology industry that is digitally transforming. We are also doing it in our personal lives. When I look around my home and the tools I use, from my mobile phone to my iPad, which I use to check email, surf the internet, listen to music, make purchases, and read books, I can confidently say I have digitally transformed. And my digital transformation beat goes on. After buying a smart TV, I canceled my cable TV subscription and replaced it with YouTube TV, the next step in digitally transforming my home. My point is, even though DX is a buzzword, it’s a technological evolution that all of us can relate to.
In this issue, we examine DX from multiple angles to get a better grasp of what it is and what it means to your customers and your business. You’ll find the comments from our Advisory Board on the topic particularly illuminating. We also look at e-commerce, another example of DX. Finally, we focus on one of the most pressing issues impacting dealers today, the employment supply chain.
